Wayfinding & Wayshowing at Heide Museum
Year: 2019
Identity
Heide Museum is an art-oriented museum placing sculpture among the natural landscape for visitors to take their time in enjoying the man-made beauties. The buildings and overall design of the museum remain minimalistic and modern. And this has been kept with my design.
Target audience
-
Visitors who drive to the museum
-
Visitors in middle-age
Issues
-
Parking signage is not clear for driver and so it diverts their attention from driving.
-
There is not signage at the junction to warn drivers for a upcoming crossing
-
Maps and on-the-spot interpretive signs being complicating and not ergonomic for elderly and disabled visitors
Strategies
Using easy-to-read signages with technologies, these signages are designed to lead drivers to unoccupied parking spaces and their interested areas while enhancing pedestrian safety in the museum. Sculpture description plates are lifted up with clear wordings to enhance the experience of middle-aged art appreciators in understanding the art pieces without hassle.
Objectives
Using minimal and simplistic design to apply clear yet accurate directions to the visitors for them to spend their effort on appreciating the art pieces while maintaining the existing philosophy of the museum and adding human warmth to the modern yet cool design
Applicability
-
The design applied is not done for attractiveness or exceptional beauty. As drivers are one of the target audiences, clear signages with directions are essential for taking as little of their attention as possible for pedestrian safety.
-
Clear and well-positioned signages are also essential for ageing or disabled visitors to enjoy their experience at the museum.
-
Yet, the design is not attractive nor hugely impressive. But as for the philosophy and aesthetic of the museum, and for clear and accurate direction guiding, minimal design is crucial in delivering the message intended.
